MHS Library | Oral Presentation - Issues

Your task

What do you believe?

One way to understand what literature is for is to view the author's world view. In this way we see The Quiet American as Graham Greene's opinion on how life is. He has opinions on love, religion, friendship, loyalty and lots else. These are sometimes more prosaically described as 'themes' but to do this also tends to reduce the novel to studyable parts, and we lose sight of its essential beauty.

Your task is to present to the class a snapshot of your world view, set next to Greene's. Is it sometimes right to murder? Is war ever justified? Should people get married? What does Greene think? What do you think?
